I enjoyed your strategy for SXSW success. I started going in 1988 and still wear my Tshirt from that convention. I'm in the music biz, and here's my strategy for success at SXSW.
1. Make all key appointments around 3 weeks before the event, the top execs. in the field fill their schedules around this time. Any later, and you will not get the appointments you want. The only way to get an appointment with a VP or higher is to email them a concept of yours that interests them. Fill 1/2 your time with key appointments.
2. To make the most PR for free at SXSW: Get with a client who also goes to SXSW that you have ongoing business with. Plan with this client sign a new contract at SXSW. At SXSW, contact the SXSW media, and inform them of this impending deal to be signed at the convention. The next day's SXSW newspaper will have an article on this deal.
3. Last time I went, we held an official SXSW showcase for an act of ours. Major labels and distributors from Europe and America showed up. They didn't sign the act there, and after the show the artist had a stroke and cannot play anymore. But the right people we invited showed up for the showcase and we still deal with these major players regularly.
4. SXSW has so much official and guerrilla marketing going on, it's a marketing MORASS. You must have your plan set before ever going to really succeed there. Good luck, and email me with any questions.

AWESOME post, Chris! Very useful for someone who's never been to SXSW, which I think is a lot of us who have signed up for the road trip. Thank you so much for writing this--had no idea that BarCamp Austin was happening, and I'm about to go register for it now.

So excited to get on the bus Friday morning!! w00t! :)
