Can Firefox & Parakey scare 37signals?..I doubt it.

We are big fans of Basecamp and the project collaboration utopia they’ve created. I was at the Getting Real Workshop a few weeks ago, and nothing seems to shake these guys. They have a ton of reasons to be super-confident, but c’mon, something has to make them say (at least), “Ok, here’s some competition.” However, seeing these guys in person, I doubt anything can shake them.

Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt (Firefox creators) entering my space may unnerve me, just a little. I don’t mean to imply that either of these companies are out to get one another, or that Parakey is a Basecamp competitor. In fact, I’m sure neither is worried about the other, but here’s what Parakey states on its homepage:

Computers are frustrating. Creating documents, finding files, sharing information— why do everyday things still seem so tedious and counterintuitive?

So the only reason I see some competition with Basecamp is because we use it to create documents, find files and share information online. Basecamp changed the way we do business forever. Firefox changed the way we browse the Internet forever. Now, maybe the founder of Firefox is poised to change the way we do business forever, again.

Niall Kennedy talks more about it here.

    Blake P says:

It’s almost like battling yourself in the mirror. They both decided to take on the 800 lb gorillas in their fields of interest and now looks like they will take on each other. Hey, apparently they don’t discriminate.

    Blake says:

This feels very much like the future. The fact that there has been a clear winner (37signals), and now another industry giant/disruptor (Firefox creators) are getting in on the game seems like this is where we’re being led. We’ve heard a lot about netvides being the next game changer, so no matter where, we are being led someplace. But who’s driving? Is some entity like Google calling the shots, or are they still dependent on the decision (adoption) we make?

Or is necessity bredding invention? Sure feels that way. bk
